Parker Hannifin, the global manufacturer of motion and control technologies, will provide its Heatric Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger (PCHE) technology for the UK’s first full-scale long-duration energy storage (LDES) facility, being developed by Highview Power. The Carrington project near Manchester will store up to 300 MWh of energy and deliver 50 MW of power per hour over six hours — a critical capability for stabilizing the UK’s power grid and maximizing the use of renewable energy.

Heatric’s PCHEs, developed by Parker’s Filtration Group, are known for their compact footprint and exceptional thermal efficiency. This marks the first time the technology will be deployed in an energy storage application, opening new opportunities in the clean energy space.

The Carrington facility will play a vital role in enhancing energy security and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. By capturing excess electricity generated by renewables during periods of low demand and releasing it when needed, the system ensures more efficient, flexible, and sustainable use of clean energy.

Heatric’s advanced evaporative heat exchangers will serve as a core component of the thermal system, minimizing energy loss during both charging and discharge cycles. Their high performance is especially well-suited to Highview Power’s liquid air energy storage (LAES) technology, which is designed to deliver long-duration output at grid scale.

The project is expected to commence commercial operations in 2026 and represents a scalable model for future storage infrastructure, essential to achieving the UK’s net-zero goals.

Strategic partnership to accelerate decarbonization

This collaboration represents a major milestone for Parker Hannifin and underscores the company’s growing role in enabling the energy transition. By integrating advanced thermal management into renewable infrastructure, Parker is helping build the resilience and efficiency required for a sustainable grid.

“Our work with Highview Power highlights Parker Hannifin’s commitment to supporting the shift to clean energy,” said Adrian Bunn, General Manager of Parker’s Filtration and Energy Solutions Division. “Heatric’s PCHE technology ensures that stored renewable energy is used as effectively as possible — helping to deliver environmental and economic value.”

“Long-duration energy storage is critical to the UK’s net-zero strategy,” added John Goldie, UK Programme Director at Highview Power. “We believe Parker’s technology will be a key enabler in our LAES system and look forward to seeing it in action.”
