Polanen supplies sustainable heat to Westland

After a successful trial period, Polanen geothermal energy has officially been supplying sustainable heat to businesses in Westland since February 9th. The commissioning is a significant milestone in the heat transition in the region, where geothermal energy is playing an increasingly important role.

After Trias Westland and Maasdijk, Polanen geothermal energy is the third location where HVC extracts heat from the deep subsurface to heat greenhouses and homes.

During preparations and testing, it was determined that the Polanen doublet can supply approximately 22.5 MWth of heat, comparable to the average heat consumption of around 24,000 households. This aligns with the contract requests from businesses, which together represent a connected capacity of around 18 MWth.

The heat is supplied to the connected companies via the regional heating network. Polanen is part of the broader network of geothermal projects in the Westland region, which is expected to grow to a heating system of approximately 500 MWth by 2030.
