Adven is strengthening the efficiency and sustainability of district heating in Estonia by installing a 1.3 MW flue gas condenser at its combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Rakvere. The new technology enables the recovery of heat from flue gases that would otherwise be lost through the chimney, redirecting this energy back into the district heating network.
The Rakvere CHP plant uses forest residues and wood chips as fuel. These are renewable resources that often have a moisture content of 40–50%.
Thanks to more effective energy use, the condenser is expected to reduce fuel consumption by an average of 20%, depending on the moisture level of the wood chips used. Lower fuel use also means reduced emissions and a smaller environmental footprint for heat production.
Installation work is currently underway. The system will be tested in December and is expected to become fully operational at the beginning of the New Year.
