Alfa Laval enables a safe ammonia-fuelled future

As the shipping industry shifts to cleaner fuels, ammonia is emerging as a viable marine fuel, and Alfa Laval is leading this transition. By leveraging its expertise in alternative fuels like methanol and LPG, the company is developing advanced systems to address the unique challenges of ammonia, such as its toxicity and low calorific value. Alfa Laval’s innovations include a dual-fuel boiler system that handles ammonia boil-off and reduces the need for additional equipment, as well as the FCM Ammonia fuel supply system, which ensures safe and controlled ammonia usage. The company’s heat transfer solutions, such as Semi-welded Plate Heat Exchangers (SWPHE), are optimized for ammonia applications. Alfa Laval also collaborates with industry leaders to advance ammonia-fueled ships, including through partnerships with WinGD and the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. These efforts aim to accelerate the industry’s shift toward sustainable, zero-carbon shipping.
