HISS™ to increase Mill’s energy efficiency

Sappi’s paper and pulp mill in Gratkorn, Austria, manufactures high-quality, multi-coated papers, intended for premium publications. Gratkorn Mill strives towards high production and continuously improving its sustainability, where Heat Management’s patented High Impact Sootblowing System (HISS) will increase the Mill’s energy efficiency.
The solution called HISS Advanced is an improved sootblowing system integrated into the DCS and is tailored to fit the Mill’s requirements of reducing steam consumption and sootblowing time in the sulfite boiler by half. This increases renewable heat and power generation while lowering CO2 emissions. With HISS, the sootblowers will consume 40-50% less steam while maintaining the same high boiler availability. Since cleaning is completed at the first impact of the steam jet, HISS also reduces erosion on the heating surfaces.
Sappi Gratkorn Mill embraces the circular bioeconomy in the production of sustainable products and by supplying the city of Graz and surrounding villages with renewable heat, to keep 22 500 households warm for the upcoming 20 years. The increased power generation because of the HISS ™.Advanced installation further contributes to the mill’s sustainability goals.
