ExxonMobil has handed Australia-based Worley a major engineering, procurement and construction services covering a hydrogen and ammonia plant in the US.
The facility would be built adjacent to ExxonMobil’s chemicals and refining complex in Baytown, Texas.
However, Worley’s contract is subject to a final investment decision, as well as “supportive government policy and necessary regulatory permits.”
ExxonMobil said that a final investment decision could be taken in 2025, with the potential to start operations in 2029.
ExxonMobil claims the planned facility is expected to be capable of producing up to 1 billion cubic feet per day of hydrogen — which has about 98% of carbon dioxide removed — and nearly 1 million tonnes of ammonia each year.
