SSAB and Alfa Laval join E.ON and Kraftringen

SSAB and Alfa Laval, in collaboration with E.ON and Kraftringen, have joined forces to harness significant amounts of residual heat emitted from the sophisticated machinery at the European Spallation Source (ESS) facility.

Alfa Laval recently delivered two pioneering Concept Zero TM heat exchangers to ESS, incorporating SSAB Zero TM steel, which substantially reduces emissions from the steelmaking process. The utilization of SSAB Zero TM steel cuts the heat exchanger’s material carbon footprint by nearly half compared to traditional steel.

To facilitate this initiative, three Alfa Laval heat exchangers will be deployed to transfer waste heat from ESS’s high-power appliances to the district energy grid, heating various parts of Skåne County. The heat will be integrated into E.ON’s ectogrid™ system before being channeled into Kraftringen’s district heating network.
